Madison West 5      Verona 1     (6/2/2009)

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning of the first round of the WIAA playoffs. However, they were only able to manage one hit in the game and a total of three baserunners.  Junior pitcher Cole Kroncke took the loss for the Wildcats as he gave up 3 earned runs in four innings of work. Senior Derek Robinson pitched the last two innings allowing only one earned run.  The loss puts the Wildcats final record at 6-15 overall, and 4-14 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

The Wildcats say goodbye to seniors Mason Meyer, Brian Stampfl, Detric McCain, Derek Robinson, Trevor Burmeister, Ben Schappe, Sam Riebau, and Peter Kirner. The seniors hard work and dedication to the program over the last four years has been greatly appreciated!


 

Verona 7      Monona Grove 1     (5/29/2009)

The Wildcats finished the season on a high note winning their non-conference game versus Monona Grove. The Wildcats got four strong innings from sophomore starting pitcher Matthew Gust as he picked up the the win and allowed only one run. Senior Trevor Burmeister threw two scoreless innings and junior Nick Olson pitched the last scoreless inning. The Wildcats end the regular season 4-14 in Big 8 Conference play, and 6-14 overall. They travel to Mansfield Stadium on Tuesday to play Madison West in the opening round of the WIAA State Playoffs.


 

Sun Prairie 10      Verona 5     (5/26/2009)

After 6 complete innings the score was tied 5-5, and Sun Prairie used a 5 run 7th inning to put the game out of reach. The Wildcats committed two costly 7th inning errors that extended the 7th inning. The Wildcats were down 5-0 entering the bottom of the 4th inning and came through with a big 5 run inning. Junior Cole Kroncke had a 2 RBI double, while junior Klayton Brandt and senior Brian Stampfl each had RBI singles. Junior Cole Kroncke pitched 6.1 strong innings and senior Derek Robinson came in and retired the two batters he faced. The Wildcats pounded out 12 hits on the day getting multiple hits from senior Detric McCain (3x3), Cole Kroncke (3x4), and Brian Stampfl (2x3).  The loss drops the Wildcats to 4-13 in Big 8 Conference play and 5-13 overall.

Madison West 5      Verona 3     (5/19/2009)

The Wildcats managed only 3 baserunners before the 6th inning, but battled over the last two innings. The Wildcats scored 3 runs in the top of the 6th to tie the game at 3-3. Junior Nick Zwieg had an RBI single, while fellow juniors Landon Flora and Cole Kroncke each tallied a RBI in the frame on a bases loaded walk and hit by pitch. The Wildcats managed only 3 hits on the day. Sophomore Matthew Gust pitched 3 2/3 strong innings on the mound for Verona allowing only 2 earned runs. The Wildcats drop to 4-12 overall and 3-12 in Big 8 Conference play.


 

Verona 11      Madison East 4     (5/15/2009)

The Wildcats scored in each of their six at bats on their way to a Big 8 Conference win. The Wildcats got seven strong innings from senior Derek Robinson as he picked up the victory on the mound. Robinson scattered nine hits while striking out two, and only walking two. Offensively, the Wildcats were led by junior shortstop Nick Olson. Olson was 4 x 4 on the day with two doubles and 4 RBI's. Senior Detric McCain was 3 x 5 with 3 RBI's. Others with multiple hits on the day were junior Klayton Brandt and senior Sam Riebau. The win moves the Wildcats to 4-11 overall and 3-11 in Big 8 Conference play.


 

Janesville Parker 6      Verona 5     (5/12/2009)

Verona continued it's early success in games, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Wildcats were only able to manage two runs the rest of the game though. Janesville Parker scored two unearned runs in the 3rd inning, and scored 4 in the bottom of the 7th to pull out the win. The Wildcats got a fantastic starting pitching performance from junior Cole Kroncke as he allowed only 2 hits while striking out 14 batters. Offensively Nick Zwieg led the Wildcats going 4 x 4 at the plate with a RBI. Kroncke also contributed offensively going 2 x 4 with 2 RBI's. Senior Brian Stampfl went 2 x 3 in the losing effort as well. The Wildcats now sit at 3-11 overall and 2-11 in Big 8 Conference play.


 

Middleton 9      Verona 8 (8 innings)     (5/8/2009)

The Wildcats again jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Middleton rallied back to tie the game in the 4th. The score was tied at 4-4 entering the top of the 8 inning. After retiring the first two Cardinal batters, Middleton put together a 2 out 5 run rally. The Wildcats battled back in the bottom of the 8th scoring 4 runs of their own, and had the tying and winning run on base to end the game. Senior Derek Robinson pitched 5 2/3 strong innings for the Wildcats allowing only 3 earned runs. Nick Zwieg led the Wildcat offensive attack going 3 x 5 at the plate with 4 RBI's. Senior Detric McCain also added two hits. Senior Trevor Burmeister took the loss for the Wildcats pitching 2 1/3 innings. The Wildcats drop to 3-10 overall and 2-10 in Big 8 play.


 

Madison Memorial 7      Verona 4     (5/5/2009)

Verona took advantage of two walks and two Memorial errors in the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Memorial battled back, and took a 5-4 lead after 4 complete innings of play. The Wildcats were only able to notch two base hits on the day. Junior Cole Kroncke had another strong outing for the Wildcats as he went 5 innings. The Wildcats drop to 3-9 overall and 2-9 in Big 8 Conference play.


 

Janesville Craig 14      Verona 8     (5/2/2009 - Game #2)

The Wildcats led 6-3 after three innings, but were unable to hold off the Cougar offensive attack. The Wildcats did pound out 11 hits and were led by senior Trevor Burmeister's 3 x 4 performance that included two triples and 3 RBI's. Junior Klayton Brandt added 2 RBI's in the losing effort as well. Others with multiple hits were senior Brian Stampfl (2 x 3) and junior Adam Beckerleg (2 x 4). The Wildcats drop to 2-8 in Big 8 conference play and 3-8 overall on the season. 

 

Janesville Craig 7      Verona 4     (5/2/2009 -  Game #1)

After 5 complete innings, the Cougars and Wildcats were tied at 4-4. However Janesville Craig scored three times in the last two innings to earn the 7-4 win over the Wildcats. Trevor Burmeister went 5 2/3 innings for the Wildcats and struck out 3 without issuing a walk. Burmeister also led the Wildcats offensively going 2 x 4 at the plate. Senior Detric McCain and juniors Nick Zwieg and Nick Olson each had a run scoring sacrifice fly. The Wildcats drop to 2-7 in Big 8 conference play and 3-7 overall.
 

 

Madison LaFollette 12      Verona 3     (4/30/2009)

The Lancers scored early and built a 4-0 lead as they entered the 7th inning. The Lancers used an 8-run 7th inning to put the game out of reach. Verona did score 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to make the final score 12-3. Verona managed only 5 hits, but was led by senior Ben Schappe who was 2 x 2 with an RBI double. Senior Detric McCain also contributed with a single and an RBI.  The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-6 in Big 8 Conference play, and 3-6 overall for the season.
 

 

Sun Prairie 2      Verona 1     (4/28/2009)

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the 1st inning, as Nick Olson lead off the game with a double and Detric McCain scored him on his own RBI double. The Wildcats managed only 3 hits the rest of the game. Sun Prairie scored once in the bottom of the 5th and again in the bottom of the 6th. Junior Cole Kroncke went the distance for the Wildcats striking out 7 while only allowing 3 hits and one earned run. The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-5 in Big 8 Conference play and 3-5 overall.
 

 

Verona 9      Beloit Memorial 8     (4/23/2009)

The Wildcats scored 6 runs in the 5th inning to tie the game at 8-8. In the top of the 6th inning, senior pinch hitter Peter Kirner hit an RBI double that scored junior Landon Flora from 1st base with two outs for what proved to be the game winning run. Senior Trevor Burmeister went the distance on the mound for the Wildcats allowing 5 earned runs and giving up 8 hits. He walked four and struck out four as well. Offensively, the Wildcats were led by junior 2nd baseman Nick Zwieg who went 2 x 3 on the day with a double and 2 RBI's. Senior Detric McCain tied the game in the 5th inning on a clutch two out 2 RBI single to left field. Burmeister also added two hits. The Wildcats now sit at 3-4 overall and 2-4 in Big 8 Conference play.
 

 

Madison West 9      Verona 8     (4/17/2009)

The Wildcats took an 8-7 lead into the top of the 7th inning versus Big 8 Conference member Madison West. The Regents struck for two runs taking a 9-8 lead, then shutting down the Wildcats in the bottom of the 7th. Verona was able to pound out 12 base hits including a double and RBI single from sophomore Kyle Jenkins. Junior Landon Flora added three base hits and so did senior Detric McCain. Junior Cole Kroncke had another quality outing going 6+ innings taking the loss. He struck out five and walked only one. Junior Nick Olson recorded the final three outs retiring the only three batters he faced. The Verona Wildcats now sit at 1-4 in Big 8 Conference play, and drop to 2-4 overall. 

 

Verona 6      Janesville Parker 0     (4/16/2009)

Verona scored twice in the first inning, on a RBI single from junior Cole Kroncke and an RBI bases loaded walk from senior Sam Riebau. The Wildcats scored another run in the 5th inning, and added three more in the 6th. Senior Trevor Burmeister went the distance for the Wildcats allowing 6 hits, no walks, and striking out 4 in the complete game shutout. The Wildcats are now 1-3 in Big 8 Conference play, and move to 2-3 overall. 

 

Madison East 11      Verona 4     (4/14/2009)

The Wildcats dropped another Big 8 Conference game, this time to Madison East. While Verona did score one run in the top of the 1st inning, Madison East answered with 4 in the bottom of the first. After three innings, the Wildcats found themselves looking at a 10-2 deficit. The Wildcats did plate two runs in the 7th inning to cut the lead to 11-4. Starting pitcher sophomore Matthew Gust took the loss, but was a victim of poor defense as Verona committed numerous errors while he was on the mound. The Verona Wildcats now sit at 0-3 in Big 8 Conference play and 1-3 overall.

 

Middleton 7      Verona 1     (4/09/2009)

The Wildcats again struggled offensively, managing only two hits on the day. Verona was also plagued by strikeouts, going down seven times. The Wildcats managed to load the bases in the first inning with no outs, but three consecutive strikeouts ended the threat. Cole Kroncke went 5 strong innings striking out two batters and allowing only one walk while scattering seven hits. The Wildcats had three errors which allowed Middleton to score 4 unearned runs. The Wildcats scored their only run in the 7th inning on a Trevor Burmeister RBI groundout that scored senior Ben Schappe. Verona drops to 0-2 in Big 8 conference play, and is1-2 overall.

 

Madison Memorial 8      Verona 3     (4/07/2009)

Madison Memorial took advantage of four Wildcat errors and 10 base on balls from Wildcat pitchers. Trevor Burmeister took the loss, going five strong innings and striking out 9 Spartans. Senior Derek Robinson pitched the last two innings, tallying three strikeouts. The Wildcats managed only three hits off Memorial's pitching.  The Wildcats took advantage of walks in the 3rd inning, and managed to score three runs cutting the deficit to 4-3.  However that would be as close as Verona would get, as Memorial tacked on four more runs in the 6th inning. The Wildcats drop to 0-1 in Big 8 play, and sit at 1-1 overall.

 

Verona 5      Milton 1     (4/02/2009)

Verona used 4 strong innings on the mound from junior Cole Kroncke to win their first game of the season. Kroncke struck out six, walking only one batter, and did not allow a hit. Sophomore Matthew Gust and Senior Trevor Burmeister combined on the last three innings allowing only one hit and one run. The Wildcats got RBI singles from junior Landon Flora, senior Sam Riebau, and sophomore Kyle Jenkins.  Senior Peter Kirner added two RBI groundouts.
