Verona 14, Parker 2
The JV Team started off the season with a dominating pitching performance by Jake Toman aka "Tito". Tito threw 4 innings striking out 7 and only allowing 1 basehit in the first inning. The 2 juniors on the team, Troy Granich and Blake Laufenberg, combined for 5 hits, 6 RBI and scored 5 runs. Cory Miller and Brodie Roehrig scored twice a piece. Jake Toner added to the offense with a double. The final score was 14-2 in 5 innings, the JV team will plan to play on Thursday if Mother Nature allows us to play. Janesville Craig 13, Verona 3 The JV team played hard but was defeated by Janesville Craig 13-3. Tekoa Whitehead made his pitching debut and looked great after the first inning. But the team fell behind 4-0 after the 3rd, and 7-0 after the 4th inning. The JV team got on the board after freshman catcher, Jason Frahm, hit his first home run of the year. Shortstop David Rogowski also hit a solo home run in the game, but Janesville's offense was too much to handle. The team is now 1-1 and is hoping to get more games in with all of the rain we have been getting this week. Beloit Memorial 7, Verona 5 The Verona JV team played Beloit in their 2013 home opener. They got a good pitching performance out of Sophomore- Grant Smith, who struck out six and gave up 4 runs, with 2 of them unearned. The Wildcats got out to a lead in the 3rd inning when Granich reached on a single, stole second, and scored on a Baltes hit. They added another run in the 4th inning when Toner reached on a dropped 3rd strike, then got to 3rd on a Frahm double. Brody Roehrig played good team baseball when he hit a sacrifice fly to score the runner from third. The Wildcats were up 5-2 before giving up the lead in the 6th inning and couldn't catch up in the last 2 innings to lose the game; 7-5. The Wildcats drop to 1-2 on the year and play Madison East next. Verona 15, Madison East 1 Verona JV (1-2) played Madison East at Badger Ridge Middle School and got a dominating pitching performance by Toman and some timely hitting by David Rogowski. Toman threw 4 innings and had 5 strikeouts while only allowing two hits and a walk. Hoyer came in and threw the 5th inning and added another strikeout and no hits. The hitting has improved for the Wildcats; Rogowski was 3-4 with two triples, a double, and 5 RBI, 8 different players recorded hits on the day with Verona beating Madison East 15-1. The Wildcats, now 2-2, will play at Sun Prairie on Tuesday, April 30th. Verona 3, Sun Prairie 0 The JV Verona Wildcats beat Sun Prairie 3-0 on Tuesday night. They got an excellent pitching performance by Tekoa Whitehead, who gave up just four hits in a complete game effort, while adding two strikeouts. The Wildcats scored twice in the first inning when freshman outfielder, Knueppel, got a base hit and then reached second from a stolen base. David Rogowski then hit a double to score Knueppel, then reached third base on a pass ball. With one out and a runner on third base, Corey Miller hit a ground ball up the middle to score Rogowski from third base. They added a run in the 7th inning when Jason Frahm reached base on a walk. Whitehead, helping himself out as the pitcher, sacrifice bunted to get Frahm to second. Auman came in to pinch run for the catcher. Joe Toner reached on a walk. With runners on first and second base, Brody Roehrig did his job to advance the runners to second and third with two outs. Auman scored after a wild pitch to "Tito" Toman to make it 3-0. The Wildcats leaned on their defense which started in the first inning when there was a runner on first base and a ground ball was hit up the middle. Rogowski made a diving play up the middle, then threw the ball without looking over his shoulder to Tony Granich for the force out. Granich and Rogowski turned two double plays late in the game to preserve the win for the Wildcats. Their record is now 3-2, and the next game is at the Verona Little League complex on Thursday, May 2nd. The first pitch is at 5:00. Janesville Craig 17, Verona 1 The Verona JV Wildcats played against Janesville Craig. Rogowski, Miller, and Roehrig lead the Wildcats offensively with two hits each. However, those are the only hits the team had. Rogowski scored the only run for Verona. Toman threw 5 innings, giving up two runs while striking out 7. The wheels fell off defensively and Janesville scored 12 runs in the last two innings to beat Verona 17-1. Janesville's leading hitter, Affolter, had two home runs in the same inning including a grand slam. The Wildcats JV team falls to 3-3.
Sun Prairie 12, Verona 0
The Verona JV team played Sun Prairie in a tough game for
the Wildcats. After beating Sun Prairie less than a week
earlier, the Cardinals were back for revenge. After a
scoreless first inning, Sun Prairie got on the board and
scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning. They added two more in the
4th, 1 more in the 5th, and 5 more in the 7th. The only hit
for the Wildcats came with two outs in the 7th inning, as
Gruber hit a two strike line drive into right field to break
up the no-hitter. The Wildcats are now 3-4.
Verona 4, Madison Memorial 0 (Game 1) The JV Wildcats played the Madison Memorial Spartans in their first double header of the year. Granick started out the game with a double, and stole third base. Rogowski walked, and after a balk by the pitcher the Wildcats scored the first run of the game. Joe Toner lead off the 2nd inning with a solo home run to make the score 2-0. In the 3rd inning Rogowski walked, stole second, and scored on a Miller single, 3-0 Verona. In the 4th inning Grant Smith drew a base on balls, and Brody Roehrig executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Smith to second base. Toman singled which scored Smith from second making the score 4-0. Tekoa Whitehead threw another lights out performance, giving up 5 hits, 0 runs, and had 5 strikeouts to earn the win. The win brings the Wildcats to 4-4. Game 2 coming up.
Verona 6, Madison Memorial 4 (Game 2) The 2nd game of the double header was an exciting one. I hope you didn't leave after the first game because you didn't want to miss this! After each team couldn't capitalize in the first inning with the bases loaded, Seliger got walked in the 2nd inning - got to second base on a passed ball - Got to 3rd base on another Roehrig Sac. Bunt - and Ryan "The Jet" Seliger stole home with a left handed pitcher on the mound to make the score 1-0. The Spartans scored 3 runs to answer in the bottom of the second inning. The Spartans added one more in the 4th inning, 4-1. The Wildcats went in to the last inning of the double header down by 3. Granick lead off the inning by reaching on an error. Frahm followed up on a hard hit ground ball which was fielded by the pitcher who threw it passed the first baseman. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Rogowski hit a ground ball to the shortstop which scored the first run of the inning and got thrown out at first for the first out of the inning. With Frahm on 3rd base, Miller hit a line drive up the middle for a base hit and an RBI. The score is 4-3, Memorial is still ahead with Miller on first base. Even with Miller's speed... The Wildcats have Whitehead pinch run. Whitehead, the tying run, gets to second base on a passed ball. With first base open, and the memory of Toner's home run in game one fresh in their minds, they intentionally walk Joe Toner to put runners on first and second. After a much needed strikeout by Memorial, Seliger steps up to the plate. After working the count with the tying run on second base, he hits a ground ball between 2nd and 3rd base which the shortstop dove for to keep the ball on the infield. Seliger's hit loads the bases with two outs in the fifth inning. Roehrig steps up to the plate, and with ice in his veins he draws a walk to score Whitehead and tie the game at 4. Toman steps up with the bases loaded and the winning run at 3rd and draws a full count walk to score Toner from third. With Granick up to bat, the Wildcats push one more across as Seliger scores on a passed ball to make the score 6-4. Hoyer came in pitch for Smith, who threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing 5 hits, walking 4, and struck out 3. Hoyer is on the mound in the last inning and got the first batter to line out, walked the second batter, and allowed a line drive before his nerves cooled off. With the tying run on first base, he allowed two lazy, fly balls which were caught by Toman in center field, and Ethan Young in right field. The win puts the Wildcats at 5-4, with their next double header on Thursday at Middleton.
Verona splits a Doubleheader at Middleton (No scores are available)
Verona 13, LaFollette 7 (Game 1) The Verona JV team started out their double header against Lafollette with good offense. After Granick and Frahm walked, Rogowski hit an RBI double. Miller hit it hard to the shortstop to score Frahm from third, and Roehrig did the same for the third RBI. In the second inning, Baltes singled, stole second and scored on a Frahm fielder's choice. With Frahm on first base, Rogowski hit his second double in as many innings to score Frahm from first. Lafollette scored four runs in the third, and Baltes and Granick scored their second runs of the game in the fourth to make it 7-4. Lafollette scored again in the fifth. Verona put them away in the fifth and sixth scoring six runs. Young scored twice, Smith scored, Toner scored, Frahm scored his third run of the game, and Rogowski scored. The final score was 13-7. With game two coming up.
LaFollette 14, Verona 11 (Game 2) Game two of the double header against Lafollette was a different story. Lafollette got on the board first, scoring three runs in the first inning. Verona came back and scored three in the second inning. Roehrig, Seliger, and Toman all scored. Then Auman, Seliger, and Toman scored again in the third. THEN Whitehead, Roehrig, and Toman scored in the fourth. After the fourth inning, Verona was leading 9-6. Lafollette came back in the fifth by scoring four runs to take the lead 10-9. Toner hit a double and later scored to tie it up at ten. Lafollette's offense was too much and outlasted Verona by scoring four in the 6th. Verona didn't have enough and only put up one run. Lafollette beat Verona 14 - 11.
Verona 6, Janesville Parker 2 The Verona Fighting JV's take their 7-6 record against Janesville Parker. Verona strikes first when Granick leads off the game with a walk, and gets driven in by shortstop David Rogowski's double. Young scored in the second inning, and Toner scored in the third. Granick, Frahm, and Seliger all scored in the sixth inning for a total of six runs. That was more than enough as Toman held Parker's offense in check - giving up five hits in seven innings, while allowing just two runs. Toman struck out four. The JV team is now 8-6.
Verona 4, Madison East 3 The Verona JV team played Madison East in a nail biter. Granick lead off the game with a walk, stole second, and scored on an error on a ball hit by Miller. Young scored in the second inning after a Seliger double. Then East scored twice in the third inning to tie it up. Fast forward to the seventh inning, with one out Toman walks. He gets to second on a passed ball, then Granick walks. They both advance on a passed ball. Whitehead singles and scores both of the runners. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with Smith in for Hoyer, the defense was stellar. After the first two runners get on by errors, the defense turns a 4-6-3 double play and gets a ground out to end the game, 4-3. Hoyer struck out two, and Smith struck out three. The JV team is now 9-6.
Oregon 10, Verona 7 The JV team played at Oregon, which is their first of three games in two days. Verona put up four runs in the first inning, with Whitehead, Toner, Miller, and Young all scoring. Oregon answered with two runs of their own. Miller scored again in the second inning. Once again, Oregon answered in the third inning with two more. Toner had his second hit of the game in the fourth inning, and later scored on a Roehrig single. Making the score 6-4 going into the 5th. Auman lead off the inning with a hit, and Toman followed with a hit. Granick walked, and after a fielder's choice which scored Auman, they couldn't score any more runs. Oregon came back and scored six runs in the fifth inning and held on to beat Verona by a score of 10-7. The JV team is now 9-7.
Verona 6, Appleton North 3 It is a beautiful Saturday morning, and the Quad "tournament" starts off at 10 AM with Verona playing against Appleton North. Toman got through the first inning on the mound. With two outs in the first inning, Toner hits a solo home run. Appleton North lead off the second inning with a double, and ended up scoring three runs in the inning. There wouldn't be any scoring until the fourth inning when Toman helps himself out with a double, and scored on a Granick single. Granick later scored on a Whitehead single. With the score tied at 3, Toman struck out the side in the fifth, and Young, Smith, and Toman all scored in the fifth. Toman held on in the sixth and seventh to win the game - 6-3. Granick had two hits, Whitehead had a hit, Toner had the home run, Ethan Young went 4-4 with four singles, Roehrig added a hit, Seliger added a hit, Smith had a hit, and Toman had two. The JV team will play later in the day against Kaukauna. The JV team is now 10-7.
Verona 6, Kaukauna 5 After hanging around the ball park all day, the Verona Fighting JV's are ready to play Kaukauna. Kaukauna was the home team. Verona didn't score in the first, and Kaukauna scored twice. There was no scoring in the second inning. In the third inning Seliger lead off with a base hit, Smith followed Seli with a single. Granick hit the ball hard and reached on an error, this scored Seliger from second making the score 2-1 with Kaukauna in the lead. In the fourth inning, with Verona down by a run, Young reached on an error. Roehrig sacrificed him to second. Seliger walked, and Smith singled scoring Young to tie the game. Baltes singled to score to score seliger, and got to second. With Baltes on second base, and Smith on third, "Zeke" worked to perfection to score Smith from third on a Grammy winning performance by Baltes. Kaukauna scored three in the fourth to take the lead, 5-4. In the fifth inning, Whitehead lead off with a walk, Toner also walked. With one out, Young and Roehrig both singled, and Seliger drew a walk. At the end of the inning, both Whitehead and Toner scored to make it 6-5, Verona winning. Freshman Fernandez came in for Whitehead and put the game away allowing just one base runner over the final three innings. The win makes the JV team 11-7.
Verona 3, Madison West 2 The Fighting JV's played a good Madison West team which was a make up game from earlier in the year. Toman ended his season with another stellar performance on the mound. Ending with 8 strikeouts, and allowing 5 hits. Freshman shortstop Fernandez lead the game with 2 RBI, and Roehrig added the third to win the game 3-2. Verona played excellent defense and had some timely hitting with great at bats. The win makes the JV team 12-7, with their final game in Beloit on Thursday.
