2013 GAME SUMMARIES                                                                                                    

 

Janesville Parker 14, Verona 10

The Wildcats finally opened up their 2013 season with Big 8 Conference opponent Janesville Parker. The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs in the top of the 1st inning, which was highlighted by a two out two RBI single from senior Derek Witte. The Wildcats gave back two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to make the score 3-2. The Wildcats added another run in the top of the 2nd inning getting another big two out RBI single from junior Jake Armstrong. In the bottom of the 2nd inning the Wildcats allowed 7 unearned runs and found themselves down 9-4. They gave up another 5 unearned runs in bottom of the 4th inning and were in a 14-4 hole. The Wildcats battled back with three runs in the top of the 5th and another three runs in the top of the 6th. Witte contributed another two RBI's in these innings. Offensively the Wildcats were led by senior Sam Sharer (2x4), freshman Ben Rortvedt (2x3), Witte (2x3), and senior Trevor Kermicle (2x4).  On the mound Witte started the game and went 1.1 innings allowing two earned runs on two hits. Junior Ryan Pynnonen pitched .2 innings allowing only one unearned run. Junior John Moynihan worked two innings and did not allow an earned run. Freshman Keaton Knueppel worked two scoreless innings while striking out two batters.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 0-1 in Big 8 Conference play and 0-1 overall.

 

Verona 6, Janesville Craig 3

The Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning when senior Sam Sharer scored on a RBI triple from freshman Ben Rortvedt. The Wildcats added another run in the 3rd and three more in 4th. Junior Jake Armstrong hit a three RBI bases loaded double to account for the runs in the 4th. The Wildcats were able to plate an insurance run in the 5th when senior Derek Witte scored on a RBI double from sophomore Connor Volker. Junior John Moynihan worked five hitless and scoreless innings to earn the victory. He struck out five batters while walking four. Senior Trevor Kermicle worked the final two frames for the Wildcats.
The win moves the Wildcats to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Madison West 12, Verona 5

Again the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the top of the 1st inning. Junior John Moynihan drew a RBI bases loaded walk and senior Derek Witte followed that with a three RBI bases clearing triple as the Wildcats lead 4-0 after the 1st inning. They added another run in the top of the 2nd inning when junior MItch Flora scored on a RBI single by freshman Ben Rortvedt. The Wildcats would watch their lead get trimmed to 5-4 as they entered the bottom of the 5th inning. The Wildcats committed two errors and allowed 8 unearned runs to seal their fate as they lost 12-5.  Witte started on the mound and worked four innings allowing four runs (three earned) on seven base hits. He struck out four and walked three. Junior Ryan Pynnonen pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing seven unearned runs to score. Freshman Keaton Knueppel worked the final 1 1/3 innings allowing a run on a base hit.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 1-2 in Big 8 Conference play and 1-2 overall.

 

Beloit Memorial 8, Verona 4

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning on a RBI single from senior Tyler Stone. The Purple Knights took the lead in top half of the 3rd inning scoring three runs. They added another run in the top of the 4th inning to push their lead to 4-1. The Wildcats battled back in the bottom half of the frame scoring two runs. Stone again had a RBI single and sophomore Connor Volker scored on a passed ball. The Purple Knights broke the game open with three runs in the top of the 6th to extend their lead to 7-4, and tacked on another insurance run in the top of the 7th. The Wildcats pushed one run across in the bottom of the 7th when junior Jake Armstrong scored on a RBI single from senior Derek Witte.  Senior Nick Phillips started on the mound and worked 5 2/3 innings. He allowed six earned runs while scattering 10 hits. He struck out two batters and walked one. Senior Lucas Kirch worked the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing only one unearned run.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in Big 8 Conference play. The Wildcats host Madison East tonight, game time is 5:00 pm at "The Chuck."

 

Verona 15, Madison East 5 (5)

The Wildcats took an early lead as they scored two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Junior Jake Armstrong belted a two run RBI double to score senior Kyle Reichert and junior John Moynihan. The Wildcats took advantage of a Madison East defensive miscue and scored six runs in bottom of the 2nd inning. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI double from senior Sam Sharer. Madison East scored a run in the top of the 3rd and another three runs in top of the 4th inning. The Wildcats kept the pressure on as they added two runs in the bottom of the 3rd and another four runs in the bottom of the 4th. The Wildcats scored the decisive run in the bottom of the 5th inning on a RBI walk from junior Jeffrey Reinholtz. Freshman Keaton Knueppel went the distance for the Wildcats on the mound as he only allowed one earned run on five base hits. He struck out eight batters while walking four.
The win moves the Wildcats to 2-3 overall and 2-3 in Big 8 Conference play.

  

Sun Prairie 11, Verona 1 (6)

The Wildcats threatened to score early in the game as they loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 1st inning, but were unable to cash in as Sun Prairie struck out the next three Wildcat hitters. The Wildcats allowed five unearned runs in the first three innings and found themselves in an early 5-0 hole. In the top of the 5th inning the Wildcats scored their only run as freshman Ben Rortvedt scored on a wild pitch. Sun Prairie added three in the 5th inning and three more in the 6th to end the game via the 10 run rule. The Wildcats managed only four hits in the game while committing four errors.  Junior John Moynihan worked four innings for the Wildcats and did not allow an earned run. Sophomore Connor Volker worked 1/3 of an inning and senior Trevor Kermicle pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-4 overall and 2-4 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Janesville Craig 5, Verona 4

The Janesville Craig Cougars took an early 3-0 lead after two innings on four base hits. They would not manage a hit the rest of the game. The Wildcats scratched across their first run in the bottom of the 4th inning when senior Kyle Reichert scored on a RBI single from fellow senior Derek Witte. The Wildcats added three runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 4-3 lead. Junior John Moynihan had the first RBI with a double down the left field line. He then scored on a RBI single from junior Jake Armstrong, who later scored on a RBI single from Witte. The Cougars scored a run in the top of the 6th inning to tie the score at 4-4 on a passed ball. The Cougars scored the decisive run that was unearned in the top of the 7th inning.  Offensively the Wildcats were lead by Reichert (2x4) and Armstrong (2x4).  Witte worked all 7 innings on the mound allowing only two earned runs on four base hits. He struck out three, walked two, and hit four batters.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-5 overall and 2-5 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Sun Prairie 2, Verona 1
The Wildcats battled the #5 ranked team in the state to a 2-1 loss. Both teams were held scoreless through 5 innings until the Wildcats' junior Jeffrey Reinholtz scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Wildcats went into the 7th inning holding a 1-0 lead. After two Sun Prairie runners reached 2nd and 3rd base, the Wildcats intentionally walked the bases to set up the double play. Sun Prairie 3rd baseman  Carter Brekke hit the game winning two run single.  In the bottom of the 7th the Wildcats battled back as junior Mitch Flora led off the frame with a sharp single to left field. He advanced to 2nd and then 3rd base on two fielders choice plays, but would not cross the plate.  Senior Nick Phillips started on the mound for the Wildcats going 3.1 innings not allowing a run, only allowing a single base hit. He struck out one and walked four batters. Senior Trevor Kermicle took the tough loss for the Wildcats as he pitched 3.2 innings allowing two earned runs on three base hits. He struck out four batters and walked two. 

The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-6 overall and 2-6 in Big 8 Conference play. The Wildcats host the Madison Memorial Spartans in a Big 8 Conference double header tomorrow, game time is 4:30 pm.

 

Madison Memorial 11, Verona 2 (Game 1)
The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. The Wildcats scored a run in the bottom half of the 1st inning when senior Sam Sharer, who led off with a single, scored on freshman Ben Rortvedt's RBI double. The Wildcats tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the 2nd inning when sophomore Connor Volker hit a RBI single to score junior Mitch Flora.  The Spartans added a run in the top of the 5th inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Wildcats then committed three errors in the top of the 6th inning that lead to five unearned runs. The Wildcats found themselves trailing 9-2 as they entered the 7th inning. Memorial scored two more runs to make it a 11-2 defeat for the Wildcats.  Junior John Moynihan worked 5.1 innings for the Wildcats and took the loss. He allowed three earned runs on eight base hits, he struck out four batters and walked two. Junior Ryan Pynnonen pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing two earned runs on three base hits, he struck out a batter and did not walk anyone. 

The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-7 overall and 2-7 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Madison Memorial 9, Verona 0 (Game 2)
The Spartans broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 3rd inning as they scored four runs. They added another unearned run in the 4th inning and scored four more in the bottom of the 5th inning for the 9-0 win. The Wildcats were held without a hit until junior Jeff Reinholtz hit a single with two outs in the 7th inning.  Freshman Keaton Knueppel started on the mound for the Wildcats. He worked 3.2 innings allowing three earned runs on four base hits. He struck out four and walked five. Senior Lucas Kirch worked the next .2 innings for the cats allowing two earned runs. Senior Kyle Reichert worked the final 1.2 innings and did not allow a hit or a run. He struck out one batter and walked one. 

The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-8 overall and 2-8 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Verona 7, Middleton 2 (Game 1)
The Wildcats found themselves in a 2-0 hole after three innings. In the top of the 4th inning junior Mitch Flora belted a two run home run to tie the game. In the 6th inning the Wildcats took advantage of two Cardinal errors to score five runs.  Junior Jake Armstrong led the Wildcats offensively going 2 x 2 with two doubles. He started on the mound working five innings and not allowing an earned run. He scattered three hits while walking five and striking out three batters. Senior Trevor Kermicle worked the final two scoreless frames and only allowed two hits. He did not issue a walk and struck out two batters.
The win moves the Wildcats to 3-8 overall and 3-8 in Big 8 Conference play.

Middleton 8, Verona 1 (Game 2)
The Wildcats were held hitless during this game, but did work to earn 9 walks.
Senior Derek Witte worked the first five innings allowing one earned run on six base hits. He struck out five and walked six batters. Junior Ryan Pynnonen worked the final two innings and did not allow an earned run. He gave up four base hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out one.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-9 overall and 3-9 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Madison LaFollete 9, Verona 7 (Game 1)
The Lancers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, and added another two runs in the top of the 2nd inning. The Wildcats battled back to tie the score at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning and two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The Wildcats got RBI's from senior Derek Witte and freshman Ben Rortvedt. The Lancers scored two runs in the top of the 4th inning to take a 5-3 lead, and Wildcats pushed a run across in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 5-4. The Lancers tacked on four runs in the top of the 6th to make it a 9-4 game. The Wildcats scored a run in the bottom half of the 6th and two more in the bottom of the 7th to narrow the gap to 9-7, and that is how the game ended. Freshman Keaton Knueppel started on the mound and took the loss. He worked 5.1 innings allowing six earned runs on five base hits. He walked four and struck out seven. Senior Trevor Kermicle worked the final 1.2 innings and he allowed two earned runs on four base hits while walking two batters.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 3-10 overall and 3-10 in Big 8 Conference play.

Verona 13, Madison LaFollette 9 (Game 2)
The Wildcats scored first in the game as senior Sam Sharer hit a triple to lead off the game and later scored on a RBI groundout from junior Mitch Flora. The Wildcats found themselves in a 8-3 hole after five innings. In the 6th inning the Wildcats erupted for six runs on four base hits highlighted by a two RBI double from senior Lucas Kirch. The Wildcats held a 9-8 lead headed into the bottom of the 9th inning, but allowed a run to force the game into extra innings. In the top of the 8th inning the Wildcats took advantage of five walks and tacked on four more runs to make it 13-9.  Junior John Moynihan worked 3.1 innings on the mound before leaving after being struck in the arm by a ground ball. He allowed four earned runs on six base hits. He struck out three batters while walking five. Kirch came into the game and worked the final 4.2 innings to earn the victory. He allowed two earned runs on seven base hits, he issued two walks and struck out one batter.
The win moves the Wildcats to 4-10 overall and 4-10 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Janesville Parker 19, Verona 3
At Verona Little League night the Wildcats were unable to provide the home crowd with a victory. The Wildcats gave up a run in the top of the 1st inning, five runs in the top of the 2nd, six runs in the top of the 3rd, four runs in the top of the fourth, and three runs in the top of the seventh. The Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting a RBI walk from freshman Keaton Knueppel, another RBI walk from senior Sam Sharer, and a RBI groundout sophomore Connor Volker.  Junior Jake Armstrong started on the mound for the Wildcats, he lasted only 1.2 innings and allowed five earned runs on three three hits, three walks, two hit batters, and did strike a batter out. Volker pitched the next 1.1 allowing three earned runs on four hits, striking out two and walking two batters. Senior Sam Sharer worked the final two innings and allowed five earned runs on nine base hits, and struck out three batters and did not walk a batter.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 4-11 overall and 4-11 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Madison East 13, Verona 3

The Purgolders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Wildcats answered in the top of the 2nd inning with a RBI single from junior Jeff Reinholtz. The Purgolders scored three more in the bottom of the 3rd and another 8 in the bottom of the 5th to end the game after five innings.  Senior Derek Witte started on the mound for the Wildcats, he allowed seven earned runs while striking out seven batters and walking three.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 4-12 in Big 8 Conference play and 4-12 overall.

 

Oregon 3, Verona 2

 The Wildcats only allowed two earned runs, but lost to the Panthers 3-2 in a non-conference game. The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The Wildcats bounced back and scored two runs in the top of the 4th inning, getting a RBI groundout from sophomore Connor Volker.  Freshman Keaton Knueppel went 3.2 innings on the mound for the Wildcats allowing only one earned run on one base hit. He struck out three and walked four batters. Senior Trevor Kermicle pitched the final 2.1 innings and did not allow a hit, run, or walk while striking out two.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 4-13 overall, and they remain at 4-12 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Verona 10, Appleton North 0 (5 innings)
The Wildcats used an eight run third inning to take a commanding lead over the #8 ranked Appleton North Lightning. They added two more in the bottom of the fourth inning to win the shortened game. Offensively the Wildcats were led by junior John Moynihan (2 x 3), senior Trevor Kermicle (2 x 3), and senior Tyler Stone (2 x 3, 2 RBI). The Wildcats also got two RBI from freshman Ben Rortvedt, senior Sam Sharer, and senior Lucas Kirch. Senior Nick Phillips worked all five innings on the mound allowing only two base hits, while walking two batters and striking out one.
The win moves the Wildcats to 5-13 overall and they remain at 4-12 in Big 8 Conference play.

Kaukauna 4, Verona 1
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning when junior MItch Flora singled, and then stole 2nd and 3rd base. Sophomore David Rogowski hit a RBI groundout to score Flora. Kaukauana took advantage of two Wildcat errors in top of the 4th inning to score all four of their runs.  The Wildcats out hit the Galloping Ghosts 10 to 5, but could not score any more runs after the first inning. Offensively the Wildcats were led by Flora (2 x 3), Rogowski (2 x 4), and senior Kyle Reichert (2 x 3).  Junior Ryan Pynnonen pitched all seven innings for the Wildcats, as he scattered five hits and did not allow an earned run. He walked three batters and struck out two.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 5-14 overall and they remain at 4-12 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Madison West 7, Verona 5
The West Regents struck first as they scored two runs in the top of the 1st inning. The Wildcats tied the score in the bottom of the 3rd with two of their own runs. Freshman Ben Rortvedt and senior Kyle Reichert each had RBI singles in the inning.
The Regents scored one in the top of the 4th, and two more in the top of the 5th, to push the score to 5-2. In the bottom of the 5th inning the Wildcats scored a run on a passed ball to cut the lead to 5-3.  In the bottom of the 6th the Wildcats tied the game up when sophomore David Rogowski had a two RBI single.   The game went into extra innings and the Regents scored two in the top of the 8th to win the game.  Junior John Moynihan started on the mound for the Wildcats as he worked 5 innings. He allowed four earned runs on eight base hits. He struck out three and walked four. Senior Trevor Kermicle took the loss working the final three innings. He allowed an earned run on one base hit. He struck out four and walked three.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 5-15 overall and 4-13 in Big 8 Conference play.

 

Verona 4, Beloit 1
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman Ben Rortvedt and junior John Moynihan each had RBI singles.  Junior Jake Armstrong was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Verona added another run in the top of the second inning when Rortvedt hit his second RBI single. Offensively the Wildcats were led by junior Mitch Flora (2 x 4), Rortvedt (2 x 4), and senior Kyle Reichert (2 x 3).  The Purple Knights scored a run in the bottom of the second inning and that was the last run of the game for either team.   Freshman Keaton Knueppel worked six strong innings on the mound allowing only three base hits. He struck out nine and walked only three. Senior Derek Witte worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.

The win moves the Wildcats to 6-15 overall and they finish the Big 8 season at 5-13.

 

Monona Grove 4, Verona 2
The Wildcats found themselves in an early 3-0 hole after the top of the 1st inning. In the bottom of the 1st the Wildcats bounced back scoring two runs. Juniors Mitch Flora and John Moynihan scored on a two RBI double from senior Kyle Reichert. The Silver Eagles added another run in the top of the 3rd inning and that was all the scoring that would happen during the game.  The Wildcats threatened in the bottom of the 7th inning putting runners on 1st and 2nd base with no one out, but they were not able to advance them.  Senior Nick Phillips started on the mound for the Wildcats and he worked three innings. He allowed four earned runs on four base hits, while issuing three walks. Junior Ryan Pynnonen worked the next two innings allowing only two hits while striking out a batter. Senior Lucas Kirch pitched a scoreless 6th inning and did not allow a hit. Senior Derek Witte worked the final frame striking out all three batters he faced.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 6-16 overall (5-13 in Big 8 Conference play). The Wildcats are the #11 seed in the WIAA playoffs and travel to play the #6 seed Milton Red Hawks on Tuesday.

 

Milton 3, Verona 2
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead 1-0 in the first inning. Junior Mitch Flora led off with a double and later scored on a RBI ground out from freshman Ben Rortvedt.
In the top of the fourth inning senior Kyle Reichert hit a one out double and later scored on a RBI bases loaded walk from senior Tyler Stone. The Red Hawks tied the game with two runs in the top of the 5th inning. The Wildcats left a runner on second base in the top of the 5th and top of the 7th innings. The Red Hawks hit a two out RBI single to win the game in the bottom of the 7th inning.  The loss eliminates the Wildcats from the WIAA tournament and ends their season. The Wildcats finished 6-17 overall and 5-13 in Big 8 Conference play.
